Launch Announcement : IAU-SOS Responsible Futures International Pilot
Responsible Futures is a whole-institution approach to embedding holistic sustainability across the formal and informal curriculum in higher education. It is a supported change programme and accreditation mark that works to put sustainability at the heart of student learning. The Responsible Futures framework assists in creating an environment for staff and students to work together, in partnership, to embed sustainability throughout teaching and learning.
IAU Interviewed | Global Citizenship Education Interview Series
IAU Manager for Internationalization Giorgio Marinoni was interviewed on 3 October 2023 by Dr Emiliano Bosio as part of his Global Citizenship Education Interview Series. During the interview, the two discussed global citizenship and internationalization in higher education. Giorgio highlighted the findings of the IAU Global Survey series on the Internaitonalization of Higher Education.
IAU Partners with UWN on the SDGs Hub
The IAU and University World News have partnered to support the work of universities by providing them with adequate and constructive visibility though the UWN’s SDGs Hub. In view of the critical importance of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), University World News dedicates a news section of their website to highlighting the work that universities, and the higher education sector as a whole, do to contribute to the achievement of the Goals.
IAU at the UN HLPF 2023
The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) was held from Monday, 10 July, to Wednesday, 19 July 2023, under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. The theme was "Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”.
Higher Education Partnerships to Accelerate Action for the SDGs
The IAU Global Cluster on HESD promotes the role and potential that HEIs globally have in order to achieve the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda. The Cluster encourages collaboration and takes a holistic approach to the SDGs, focusing specifically on the whole-institution approach. The IAU Global Cluster on HESD brings HEIs from all continents together and encourages them to develop joint initiatives and synergies.
Are North American HE institutions truly globally engaged?
Internationalisation of higher education is a concept that has been theorised and debated mainly by scholars coming from the so-called Global North and, among them, scholars from North America occupy a prominent place. Many North American higher education institutions occupy first place in international rankings and the United States is the first destination country of international students around the world, while Canada is the third.

SDGs: Study urges universities to see students as resource
This article considers how “constraints associated with a lack of financial resources could prevent universities from taking a leadership role in addressing issues associated with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” It references the 3rd IAU Global Survey on Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development.
IAU SDG 3 Cluster Meeting Barcelona
IAU Programme Officer for HESD Isabel Toman took part in a 3-day workshop for the members of the IAU HESD Cluster on SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing, hosted by the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), IAU Member and Cluster Lead, in Barcelona. Representatives of six universities from all continents discussed how “Catalysing collaboration for an integrated approach to health in support of equity and wellbeing worldwide” can be put into action.

Volume 37 Issue 2 of Higher Education Policy covered issues such as the college admission policy evolution from 2003 to 2020 in China, undestanding cancel culture in higher education in the Arab world, and the establishment of American-style universities in post-conflict societies. In addition to these topics, brain drain and brain gain, how ECTS changes the idea desired student conduct, and the relationship bewteen student funding policies and student labour were analysed.
Survey shows universities accelerating action for SDGs
Higher education is accelerating action for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with universities showing “more substantial institutional commitment”, more actors involved, and increasingly holistic approaches, according to the third International Association of Universities or IAU Global Survey Report on Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development.
