2026 ENIS Training Trajectory: How to Translate Scientific Results into Practice

The fourth ENIS Training Trajectory supports researchers, PhD-students and practitioners in bridging the gap between academic research and practical application in International Student Mobility (ISM). The main focus will be on translating scientific results into actionable recommendations, strategies, and policies. Participants will gain insights into (1) how to assess scientific quality of published work, (2) how to identify research-practice gaps, and (3) how to design effective implementation strategies. During the training trajectory, participants will be working and focusing on their own topics of interest in ISM.

The IAU is pleased to contribute to this programme via session 3 - How to translate recommendations into actionable outcomes. The IAU will be represented onsite by Manager for Internationalization Giorgio Marinoni.

Session Descriptions

Session 1 – Introduction, methodologies and assessing quality in research
Date: 23 January, 10:00-12:00 (Online)
Trainers: Christof Van Mol, Tilburg University (NL) & Emrys Gerritse, Oslo Metropolitan University (NO)

This first session introduces participants to the theme and structure of the Training Trajectory and gives an overview of how to assess research quality, including methodologies. At the end of the session, training school participants will form groups in which they will work together for the remainder of the training school and select a main topic of interest of the group.

Session 2 – How to formulate tangible recommendations for practice
Date: 18 February, 13:00-15:00 (Online)
Trainers: Rúna Vigdís Guðmarsdóttir, Icelandic Centre for Research (IS) & Cosmin Nada, University Institute of Lisbon (PT)

The second meeting provides more input as well as practical exercises to develop the participants’ ability to translate scientific results into actionable recommendations. Through hands-on exercises and discussions, participants will explore gaps between research and practice and reflect on why certain recommendations or policies succeed or fail.

Session 3 – How to translate recommendations into actionable outcomes
Dates: 9-10 March (Face-to-face training, Tirana, Albania – EPOKA University) – 2 days
Trainers: Adriana Perez-Encinas, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (ES) & Giorgio Marinoni, International Association of Universities (FR)

The on-site part of the training trajectory will bring participants together in person to consolidate what they have learned. Participants will refine their group action plans, present their findings, and receive feedback from experts. The sessions will focus on guidelines for applying scientific results in real-world contexts and developing solutions to specific problems related to their chosen topics.

(Optional) session 4 – Follow-up
Date: 11 June, 10:00-11:30 (online)

An optional session during which participants have the opportunity present and to reflect on their work and (future) implementation efforts and strategies together with the trainers.
