The Value and Values of the European University in Global Context
IAU Secretary General Highlights the Enduring Role of Universities at the 735th Academic Year Opening in Macerata
On the occasion of the 735th Opening of the Academic Year at the Università degli Studi di Macerata, IAU Secretary General Hilligje van’t Land delivered a keynote address on “The Value and Values of the European University in Global Context.” The ceremony marked not only a significant milestone for one of Europe’s oldest universities, but also an opportunity to reflect on the evolving role of higher education institutions in a time of global change.
In her remarks, Dr. van’t Land emphasized the enduring mission of universities such as Macerata, whose centuries-long legacy demonstrates the capacity of higher education to adapt, evolve, and lead.
“Universities like Macerata have weathered centuries of change, adapting to political upheaval, social shifts, and technological revolutions. Throughout this, they have remained beacons of knowledge, fostering critical thinking and intellectual exploration. They have increasingly responded to the demands of society, navigated complex relationships with political and religious powers, and contributed to the well-being of their communities. Today, this legacy is as relevant as ever, as universities across the world face new and mounting challenges.”
The speech explored how academic institutions can remain autonomous while serving the public good, how core academic values can guide leadership in turbulent times, and how the European university tradition continues to offer globally relevant perspectives.
The IAU was especially pleased to celebrate this moment alongside Professor John McCourt, Rector of the Università degli Studi di Macerata and graduate of the first cohort of the IAU Executive Leadership Programme (ELP). Also present was Professor Inga Zaleniene, IAU Board Member and Vice President, reaffirming the strong ties between the University and the global IAU community.
The event brought together scholars, students, and institutional leaders to honor the university’s legacy and to envision its future role within an increasingly interconnected global higher education landscape.
The IAU congratulates the Università degli Studi di Macerata on its 735th anniversary and thanks the university community for the warm welcome extended to Dr. van’t Land and IAU representatives during this momentous occasion.
