In Focus: The Value of Universities in the Era of Artificial Intelligence

In this edition of IAU Horizons, the In Focus section is devoted to the theme of the IAU 17th General Conference: The Value of Universities in an Era of Artificial Intelligence. While countries around the world and societies at every level are grappling with how this technology will shape the future of our societies and, ultimately, the human condition, we, too, are compelled to contemplate the impact this will have on higher education and beyond.

As such, we turned to academic experts to tell us about the ins and outs of AI. We asked them to share their insights and expertise in the form of a letter addressed to university leaders, as collegial recommendations to consider. It has been a heartwarming exercise to see the vast breadth of reflections assembled in these 26 contributions.

We are extremely grateful to every author for sharing their insights and contributions. Collectively and with their complementary perspectives, they point to the many profound questions at stake, as well as to the opportunities that lie before us for shaping the future of the university.

This issue has no simple recipes for the transformations ahead. Rather, it is a collection of fundamental insights that will undoubtedly inform our thinking about AI and the difficult decisions we must make about how to move forward.
