Internationalization of Higher Education: Current Trends and Future Scenarios
The IAU 6th Global Survey on the Internationalization of Higher Education received responses from 722 higher education institutions (HEIs) in 110 countries and territories. The resulting survey report analyses the findings in order to present both global and regional trends. Furthermore, the report compares current findings with data from the IAU’s previous Global Surveys on Internationalization in order to explore long-term changes occurring in the internationalization field. IAU Horizons: The Future of Internationalization in a Changing World
The In Focus section of this volume is dedicated to the theme The Future of Internationalization in a Changing World. Authors from all regions of the world, representing different institutions and organizations, share their insights on the internationalization of higher education given ongoing global transformations. This edition of IAU Horizons also presents key outcomes from the IAU 16th General Conference.
The Internationalization of Higher Education in the Wake of COVID-19: A Rigorous Review of the Literature on Shor term Impacts
This report is published as part of the Future of Internationalization Partnerships Project, a collaboration between the IAU, the Center for International Higher Education (CIHE) at Boston College, and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. This report, produced at the end of the first year of the project, was published as a part of the CIHE Perspectives Series.
The Second IAU Global Survey Report on the Impact of COVID-19
In February 2021, the International Association of Universities launched the second edition of the global survey on the impact of COVID-19 on higher education to monitor the situation one year into the pandemic. The survey gathered replies from 496 HEIs in 112 countries and worldwide.
The Continuing Need for Internationalization of Higher Education
International cooperation and exchange are essential conditions for tackling the huge challenges faced by humankind today, as expressed in the UN Agenda 2030 and the SDGs. Internationalization of higher education and research is a key component in this respect by building international, global and intercultural competences, mutual understanding and respect among new generations of leaders, professionals and citizens worldwide.
IAU Global Survey on the Impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education around the World
The first IAU Global Survey on the Impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education around the world was conducted online from 25 March to 17 April 2020. It received 576 replies from 424 universities and other Higher Education Institutions based in 111 countries and territories.

Internationalization of Higher Education: Growing Expectations, Fundamental Values
The purpose of the IAU Global Surveys is to provide data and analysis of developments in internationalization of higher education. Alongside its data collection on the importance, the activities and priorities of this process, this 4th edition of the IAU Global Survey adds an important focus on values and principles, as well as the potential benefits and risks of current trends in internationalization of higher education for both institutions and society.

Affirming Academic Values in Internationalization of Higher Education: A Call for Action
The Call for Action approved by the IAU Administrative Board in 2012 articulates the Association’s viewpoint on the positive impacts of internationalization and the necessity of opening up higher education institutions and systems to perspectives from beyond national and regional borders. It also points out some of the dangers and adverse effects that the internationalization process can bring.

The following provides highlights of some of findings of the 2005 IAU Global Survey on Internationalization of Higher Education, reported in Internationalization of Higher Education: New Directions, New Challenges, authored by Dr. Jane Knight and published by IAU.
Sharing Quality Higher Education across Borders
The ways in which higher education institutions expand their activities internationally is changing rapidly and dramatically. Focusing most specifically on those aspects that involve crossing borders in order to expand the educational offer, and which appear to be more market-driven, IAU worked with three other associations to raise awareness of this type of activity and set out principles and recommendations that would maximize benefits for all who are involved.
Internationalization of Higher Education Practices and Priorities
The IAU’s commitment to and interest in the processes of internationalization is reflected in all of the Association’s activities. The IAU Working Group on Internationalization is charged with the responsibility to guide the work of the Association in this area. The 2000 IAU Policy Statement Towards a Century of International Cooperation, and a major international conference in Lyon, France in 2002, are just two examples of IAU activities in this field.
Towards a Century of Cooperation
The conviction that internationalization of higher education and cooperation among universities is not a luxury reserved for some or simply a means to improve others, but rather a necessity for all institutions of higher learning has been growing for some time. In part internationalization is also seen as a response to the globalization of the economy, of the production of goods, in fact of all kinds of human endeavors.
