In Focus: Repositioning Internationalization in a New Geopolitical Era
In recent years, the world has undergone a profound transformation. In many countries, extreme right political movements with ideologies anchored in nationalism, nativism, xenophobia, and illiberalism pose threats to democratic institutions. At the same time, the globalization process that happened in the last 30 years is slowly being substituted by a more fragmented, deglobalizing world in which the unipolar dominance of a single superpower (the USA) is gradually being replaced by a more contested, bi- (China and USA) or multipolar order in which many “middle-powers” influence political realities, especially in their regions.
Against this backdrop, this In Focus section is dedicated to the theme: Repositioning Internationalization in a new geopolitical era. Leaders of higher education institutions worldwide share their reflections on the current state of internationalization and its possible future evolution. We are pleased to present 17 articles from 16 countries across all regions of the world, examining the strengths and weaknesses of current models of internationalization and the threads and opportunities for change lying ahead.
