Renée T. White

Former Provost, Executive Vice President, and Professor of Sociology, The New School, USA

Dr. Renée T. White is a sociologist and Black feminist scholar with extensive experience in organizational restructuring, strategic planning, curricular development, and cultural programming. She earned an AB from Brown University and an MA and PhD from Yale University. Dr. White was Professor of Sociology at The New School (New York, USA), where she also held senior leadership roles as Special Advisor to the President and, for many years, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. Previously, Dr. White served as Provost at Wheaton College and as Dean of Arts and Sciences at Simmons University (both in Massachusetts, USA) and she has held academic appointments at a number of institutions in the USA. 

Dr. White has authored and edited books on Frantz Fanon, gender and global social movements, HIV/AIDS, and Afrofuturism in film. Her current research focuses on Black cinema, and equitable practices in higher education. Dr. White’s professional service includes being a facilitator for the IAU Executive Leadership Program and the Campus Africa Leadership Lab. She is Vice Chair of the Ms. Foundation for Women, a board member of The Conversation US, Seeds of Fortune, and the Rachel Carson Council National Advisory Council. In June 2024, she was named to City & State New York’s Trailblazers in Higher Education list.
