Navigating Common Waters: Ocean Science Diplomacy for a Sustainable Common Future

The IAU was pleased to co-organise a side event with the University of Bergen (UiB), INPO - Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Oceânicas, the International Science Council, and the United Nations Academic Impact (UN AI) in the context of the UN Ocean Conference 2025 in Nice, France.

The event, which took place at the campus of Université Côte d'Azur, brought together researchers, policy makers, youth and professionals to discuss the role of ocean science diplomacy as a venue for balanced cooperation and enhanced implementation of SDG 14 across the 2030 Agenda. Speakers provided excellent examples of innovative solutions to unite actors across sectors, regions, and generations, ensuring a balanced Global North-South approach amid a shifting global order.

Ocean governance is ever more crucial for sustainability - and higher education and research needs to have a voice in this discussion.
