Ilia State University Under Spotlight Amid Education Reforms
In early February 2026, Ilia State University (ISU), an IAU Member in Tbilisi, Georgia, became the focal point of national and international attention due to sweeping higher education reforms introduced by the Georgian government. The reforms have led to a severe reduction in admissions for the upcoming academic year. This move has sparked widespread concern over the future of academic freedom and institutional autonomy in Georgia.
Throughout February, students, faculty, and university management united in protest, describing the reforms as “unconstitutional” and a threat to the quality of higher education. Demonstrations were held in Tbilisi, with protestors marching to the Ministry of Education and the Georgian Parliament. ISU Deputy Rector Giorgi Gvalia stated, “There is complete unity within the university community… we will use every legal mechanism available because we believe it is illegitimate and contradicts the Constitution of Georgia.” The reforms have also drawn criticism for potentially undermining ISU’s multidisciplinary approach, which includes research, humanities, and international programmes.
The IAU stands in solidarity with ISU, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding university autonomy and academic diversity.
