75 Years of the IAU

On 9 December 2025, the International Association of Universities celebrates 75 years of collective commitment to strengthening higher education worldwide. Founded in 1950 by UNESCO, the IAU was created on the conviction that universities are essential to peace, mutual understanding, and sustainable progress. For seven and a half decades, the Association has convened institutions, organisations, and higher education leaders from every region to exchange knowledge, uphold fundamental academic values, and work together for a more equitable world.

To mark this milestone, IAU President, Prof. Andrew Deeks, and IAU Secretary General, Dr. Hilligje van’t Land, have issued a joint anniversary message reflecting on the Association’s past achievements and its continued commitment to serving the global higher education community. Their letter underscores the enduring relevance of IAU’s mission and the vital role of international collaboration in addressing today’s complex challenges.

The series reflects on the milestones that expanded IAU’s global reach, the initiatives that advanced its mission, and the countless contributions of Members who have helped strengthen higher education systems across borders.

The video series is comprised of two parts: A timeline of IAU through the years and a feature of Member achievements. Discover both subseries below.

Furthermore, IAU is pleased to share the congratulatory messages received by members of the IAU Administrative Board and Senior Fellows on this special occasion.
