A virtual side event at the UNESCO WHEC2022, this session unites leaders of regional and national university organisations and associations to examine the impact of the pandemic on the future of Higher Education. Specific emphasis is on lessons learnt during the pandemic and how this experience will shape the future of higher education.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a transformative moment in history. It mainly created new challenges and new opportunities. However, it also acted as a catalyst for already existing processes; it accelerated transformations and exposed the strengths and weaknesses of our societies. On the one hand, it demonstrated the importance of global cooperation, knowledge, research and science. Still, on the other hand, it showed the predominance of narrow interests leading to closeness, competition and eventually greater inequality in the world. This session investigates higher education in this new reality, drawing on the second IAU "Global Survey on the impact of COVID-19 on Higher Education: Higher Education One Year into the COVID-19 Pandemic".
The survey was conducted in the first half of 2021, gathering replies from 496 HEIs in 112 countries and territories worldwide. Topics covered a wide range of academic functioning and missions from governance, teaching, learning and research to community/societal engagement. The report includes the global results and regional analysis in four world regions. In addition, the survey report includes national and regional perspectives written by organisations and associations of universities from different parts of the world.
